A ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie Is In the Works

Breaking Bad had a bloody ending back in 2013, but it’s way too soon to call the show dead. Creator Vince Gilligan is working on an upcoming movie tied to the beloved, Emmy-winning AMC series, Variety reported.

Here’s what we know so far about the Breaking Bad spin-off film, though details are hard to come by.

The Breaking Bad movie is a two-hour feature, and Vince Gilligan is steering it.

This is cause for relief among Breaking Bad fans. Creator Vince Gilligan, who’s also deeply involved with the acclaimed Breaking Bad TV spin-off Better Call Saul, is regarded as the creative mastermind of the universe. He’s reportedly helming the two-hour movie, including writing the script, executive producing, and possible directing. It’s unclear if the movie will get a theatrical release or go to TV, though it certainly wouldn’t have a hard time finding people willing to distribute it in theaters.

We don’t know what stars will be in it yet.

While Gilligan is a sure bet, there’s no word yet on whether stars including Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are attached to the project. However, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are said to be working with Gilligan on the feature. It will also mark a reunion for Gilligan and Sony TV, after Gilligan just signed a new three-year overall deal with the company in July.

The movie may be coming sooner than you think.

It’s hard to believe since the project has just been leaked to media, The Albuquerque Journal reports that the movie “will begin production in the Duke City mid-November through early February.” That means it could conceivably come out next year.

It already has a mysterious working title.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gilligan’s movie has been floating around Hollywood with the working title Greenbrier. What could it mean? Well, Greenbrier is a county in West Virginia, but really, who the hell knows? We can plan to see more dramatic shots of the Southwestern desert: The New Mexico Film Office confirmed that a project titled Greenbrier is scheduled to shoot in in the region.

There’s speculation it will follow Jesse after Breaking Bad.

One of the more popular theories on Reddit is that the Breaking Bad movie will be set directly after the events of the series. The speculation (and that’s all it is at this point) is that “it will likely be a movie about Jesse’s life after Breaking Bad,” as one Reddit user wrote. It also dovetails with reporting that the film “is said to follow the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.” (As we know, an imprisoned Jesse had to haul ass to get out of dodge in the Breaking Bad finale.)

And while it could turn out to be totally false, the theory makes some sense, as Better Call Saul has also given us flash-forward scenes depicting Saul Goodman’s sad post-Walter White life in exile. Fans would certainly be thrilled to finally see poor Jesse Pinkman break free.
